Donald Kagan RIP

I have no personal connection to Yale or Donald Kagan, but I enjoyed listening to some of his lectures on Ancient Greece that are free online, as I previously noted in my first blog post, and I approvingly cited his take on Niall Ferguson’s book Civilization: The West and the Rest, here. 

He was a stout defender of the West in academia, and I’m sure he will be missed. He passed away Aug 6, the age of 89.

Moving to Substack

  I am transferring my writing to Substack, under the title “ Reasonableness .” I’m hoping that Substack makes blogging simpler. I never put in the time to learn the blog tech and tools. Finding that the subscribe button no longer works, I am opting to shift to a simpler platform rather than try to figure out what went wrong. Also, I find myself reading other blogs on Substack pretty regularly, so this could make sense. We will see how it goes.   The down-side is that my blogging is usually done on my phone on the go, and Substack doesn’t have a mobile writing app that I’m aware of. So if I end up here again, that might be why.

Leo Strauss's infamous "esoteric" reading of John Locke

Leo Strauss It is no secret that I am a fan of John Locke. I stole this blog’s name from the title of one of his books, after all. I am very impressed and inspired by his unique and refreshing combination of clear-headed reason and reliance on faith and scripture. I have to say I was a little dismayed and surprised when I saw that many or most political commentators today see John Locke as an atheist / deist / secularist, following the “Straussian” reading of Locke. This so strongly contradicted everything that I saw in my reading of Locke that it was quite baffling, and I felt a need to figure out what was going on. The Reasonableness of Christianity was the first of John Locke’s works that I came across (see my thoughts here ), as my interests (outside of my day job) are essentially Christian and religious. Pseudoscience, Edward Dutton, and Christianity

I have in my head a framework for a multi-post series on rationality and Christianity, building in part on insights from a couple of books I am reading, including  Inventing the Individual by Larry Siedentop (2020) (I commented on his refreshing historical approach in my last post ) and Christianity and History by Herbert Butterfield (1949). But my time is short and I get distracted. But this is at least tangentially related. Earlier this week a book recommendation came up on Amazon for a book with the provocative title  Witches, Feminism, and the Fall of the West , by Edward Dutton. The cover was a picture of a woman being burned at the stake with flames rising all around her. My wife saw this recommendation come up and jokingly expressed some concern about what I must have been reading that would prompt such a suggestion. She read the overview on Amazon out of curiosity.
